Becoming a Christian

By Not Known

What is a Christian?

A Christian is someone who trusts, follows and serves Jesus Christ.

Christians believe that Jesus was ‘God in the flesh‘. He is the Son who left
heaven’s throne to come to earth to live amongst us, to die and to be raised.
His death enables us to become God’s people.

Because Jesus was fully human, he could represent us to God. Because he lived a
sinless life, he could make a sacrifice worthy to pay for our sins. Because he was
God, he could offer a sacrifice of infinite value – sufficient to pay for the sins of
all.

Our first point of connection with Jesus is to trust him for salvation. This is the
focus of our services today.

What does this mean to trust Jesus for our salvation?

Many know that they fall short of God’s standards. We try our hearest to live in a way that pleases God, but realise that our best is not good enough. Perhaps we turn to religious ritual – attending places of worship, making offerings and saying prayers. But somehow it all seems empty and we wonder: ‘Is it really so?‘ Or maybe we think we can buy our way into heaven with charitable gifts. But, what gift of ours can pay for our sins?

The Christian Scriptures speak to us in a way we can understand: …if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Rom 10: 9). To be a Christian is to trust that Jesus was good enough for God. When we believe in Jesus, God looks at his perfection and counts it to our account. God sees us as good enough for him, because Jesus was good enough for him.

What comes next?

When someone trusts Jesus for their salvation they have made a fresh start to life. It’s as though they have been born all over again. Now we can really begin to live – to live as God always meant us to live. Our church can help you begin this new life as your trust in Jesus turns into following and then serving him.

Dear Jesus, I confess and repent of my sins. I trust you for salvation and thank you for saving me. Help me to start a new life of trusting, following and serving you.
