Sermon Outline 21 September

Hold Fast, Learn from Abraham

Hebrews 11:8-19

Introduction: An encouragement and an appeal for those who struggle in their faith

  1. The faith of Abraham, Sarah and the Patriarchs (Heb 11:8-16)
    • Abraham’s obedient faith – God’s command mattered more than Abraham’s uncertainty (Heb 11:8-10)
    • Abraham and Sarah’s hopeful faith – God’s commitment to His promises mattered more than their impossible circumstances (Heb 11:11-12)
    • The Patriarchs’ pilgrim faith – Eternal joy with God mattered more than temporary suffering (Heb 11:9-10, 13-16)
    • Who is the object of their faith? Who did they long to be with in heaven?
      • Answer: The God who is both powerful and loving to his covenant people and will bring them home (Heb 11:16).
    • How does the example set by Abraham, Sarah and the Patriarchs relate to:
      • Transitions in life [School, Family, Career, Retirement]
      • Long seasons of sorrow/waiting
  2. God’s trustworthiness displayed in Abraham’s testing (Heb 11:17-19)

Conclusion: Will our lives and lips witness to our resurrection hope in Christ?
