By Not Known
Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is one of the most significant discoveries of the twentieth century. Our DNA comes from the combination of genes contributed by each of our biological parents. DNA is the “blueprint” of inherited genetic molecular material for our unique identities. Knowing your DNA is useful in solving paternity disputes, optimizing health issues, unravelling criminal investigations, and even understanding our behaviour. However some people blame their DNA to cover up their bad behaviours.
Just as our physical DNA defines us, our spiritual DNA also identifies us with our heavenly parent. Are you known for a particular bad character trait? Are you easily angered? Do you always demand your own way? Do you keep record of wrongs? Are you divisive in spirit … and more? Have you been trying to change but have been unsuccessful?
When we accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, God breathed new life into us. God is in us and we have inherited God’s DNA. In his letter to the Galatians, Paul said “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Gal 5:22-23). The Spirit not only has the power to transform lives but the fruit of the Spirit is a testament of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the life of a Christian. But just as physical traits take time and discipline to develop so it is with spiritual traits. We need to cooperate with the Spirit and let God refine our character.
How can we activate God’s DNA? First, read and study God’s Word daily. “The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12). Second, be sensitive to sin. “Do not bring sorrow to God’s Holy Spirit by the way you live. Remember, He has identified you as His own” (Eph 4:30). Third, only God can help you, so ask for His help. “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” (Jam 1:12). Fourth, ask God to give you godly friends and mentors who can pray for you and encourage you to live as Christ commanded us. Last, have faith in God. God is at work in you (and those around you) and He has great plans for you (Jer 29:11).
If we put our spiritual DNA under a microscope, would we see the fruit of the Spirit? “Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.” (Gal 5:24-25)
