Applying the Principle of Soli Deo Gloria to Life
To live with Soli Deo Gloria (Latin for “glory to God alone”) means directing every aspect of life — work, relationships, and actions — to honour God rather than seeking personal recognition. It is a Protestant Reformation doctrine asserting that salvation and all of life are for God’s praise, shifting focus from human achievement to God’s glory.
Our SOCM talk on 26/4/26 focuses on the key aspect of holistic worship. This idea implies that everyday activities — such as eating or working — are opportunities to honour God, not just Sunday worship. This translates to purposeful living, whereby one’s life is transformed into a purposeful act for God and the gospel.
The talk will conclude with examples of how to live with integrity, serving others in Christ’s name, and — as composer J.S. Bach did — dedicating one’s talents to God rather than personal fame. This doctrine of Soli Deo Gloria serves as a reminder that without God, we can do nothing, and therefore everything should ultimately point back to Him.
