A New Song

By Pr Herna Kong

We read in Psalm 40:1-5 of David’s misery. He cried out to God to rescue him. God delivered him from “the slimy pit” and “the mud and mire”, and set his feet on a rock (v. 2).

A deliverance from misery is seldom a one-time occurrence. As we read further into Psalm 40, we see David’s renewed plea for God to deliver him from his sin and threats from his enemies (vv. 11-14).

With each new plea to God and deliverance by Him in His grace, David came up with a new song; “He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God” (v. 3). This song of gratitude was handed “to the chief musician” for use in sanctuary services—the proclamation of God’s grace before men.

The Bible encourages us to continue singing new songs in our deliverance from sins, enemies and our ultimate enemy, Satan—

Sing to the LORD a new song, for he has done marvelous things; his right hand and his holy arm have worked salvation for him (Ps. 98:1).

Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth (Ps. 96:1)!

Sing to the LORD a new song, his praise from the end of the earth, you who go down to the sea, and all that fills it, the coastlands and their inhabitants (Isa. 42:10).

The song of redeeming grace is new, superadded to the song of creation. It will be ever new; whether on earth or in heaven, it can never grow old or lose its freshness and glory! He who was “in the pit,” next “on his knees,” then “on a rock,” is the man who will have power when he declares it in a song of praise to God.

To walk in fellowship with God
And sense His love and care
Can put a song within our heart
That we can’t help but share.

Each new day gives us a new reason to sing a new song of praise to God.
